A long-held misconception is that hacking must be done 'on the bit' with the horse in a state of collection and control. This is fine for training purposes, but hacking out for the pure pleasure of it is another story, which is not widely known! What is also not realised sometimes is that the horse must be trained to hack out, particularly on his own - and this can be a scary prospect for a horse who isn't used to it. Primarily, the horse must be relaxed and submissive to ride out kindly and quietly. How to achieve this is the big question, which is answered here! A potted biography! Started riding at the age of 10. Trained my first horse at the age of 14. Gave my first riding lesson at the age of 15. Started problem solving some 10 years later and have been doing it ever since! Have also spent many years in pursuit of other activities, such as gymkhana, the 3 disciplines, long distance trekking, driving etc. In fact, I have probably done almost everything it's possible to do with horses - except round up cattle on the open range. I'd love to do that!
