The Art of Solving Problems with Horses

Something to play around with ...

If you don't already, play around with the idea of loose-rein riding.

NB.  DO THIS IN A SAFE PLACE, such as an arena, paddock or a fenced and gated field!

Start in walk.  Get your horse going in the way you are accustomed.  Then, slowly and carefully let the reins slip through your hands until they are looser.

At the same time, if your legs are in contact, move them away from his sides.

Carry on a little way, then carefully let the reins slip through some more - and remember your legs.  They need to be well away from his sides.

If your horse speeds up and feels like he might run away with you, STOP there.

The aim is to get your hands right back to the buckle, so there is actually a loop in them.

When you have completed the task, answer these questions:

1. Did your horse behave any differently?

2. If so, was his behaviour better or worse?

3. Did you find it easy, or difficult?

4. How did you feel about it?  Were you happy about it, or did you feel unnerved?

5. Do you think you could get used to it???
