The Art of Solving Problems with Horses

Another simple exercise ...

Not only does this exercise consolidate the idea that doing things differently isn't so hard after all - it might also be useful one day!

What you are going to do now, is change the way you groom your horse ... so follow the directions and away you go ...

Don't forget ... Make sure you have understood what to do, before you start!

Instead of tying your horse up to groom him, hold the rope in your hand - and leave it loose.  This is important.

The horse should not be restrained in any way.

Now, proceed with your grooming.  You should find you can brush him all over - as you usually do.

NB.  If your horse won't stand still for grooming, try it anyway and make the best of it.  Just keep him on a small circle round you.  Don't let him walk away!

And how easy is that??  Well maybe not quite so easy, as your horse may not co-operate fully - but do try the exercise anyway and do the best you can.

When you have completed the task, answer these questions:

1. Did your horse behave any differently?

2. If the answer is 'no, he was just the same', were you pleased?

3. If the answer is 'yes' what happened for you?  Did you get annoyed?  Did you persevere, or tie the horse back up again?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It is just a matter of being aware of how you respond.

4. Do you now feel you could do some other things differently - as long as they're not too hard??
