STANDARD PROCEDURES

If all horses were the same, with similar backgrounds and experience, it would be relatively easy to prescribe a standard method or approach to solving their problems.

But they are not.  Horses are all so different that solving their problems means taking many factors into consideration, such as ...

- what is he being asked to do?

- has he ever done it before?

- the situation (schooling, hacking etc) in which

the problem occurs

- what has been tried, if anything.

There are however, a few problems that can be resolved with a one-size-fits-all standard procedure.  They are listed here.

Tying up

Bridling

Hosing

Head-shaking

Picking up feet

Mounting - Assisted

Mounting - Training

Follow the directions slowly and carefully.

Confidence is the key.  Be confident in what you are doing, but also calm and relaxed.

Keep the process moving forward. When each stage is completed satisfactorily, it's time to move on.
